Comment utiliser "look" en anglais

Le verbe "look" peut être utilisé de différentes manières en anglais. Voici notre guide !


Look (see)

“If you look left, you can see the castle.”

“She looked carefully at the photo.”


Aussi:

Look for = chercher quelque chose

A:”What are you doing?”

B: “I’m looking for my phone. I think I left it here earlier. Have you seen it?”


Look at  = regarder quelque chose avec attention

“Look at that view! It’s beautiful, isn’t it!”

(Ne confondez pas "look at" avec "watch" qui signifie regarder quelque chose qui bouge)


Have a look = cherchez quelque chose

“I can’t find my new book. Can you have a look for it?”


Take a look = regardez quelque chose

“Take a look at that house. It’s gorgeous!”


Look + adjective (sembler / apparaître)

“You look tired.” (Or hungry / upset / happy, etc)

“It looks likely / unlikely (that) we’ll go on holiday this year.”

Nous utilisons souvent "look + adjective" pour faire un commentaire sur l'apparence de quelqu'un.

“You look well! (You look healthy)

“You look great!” (You look really good in those clothes / You look very healthy)

“She looks lovely in red.” (The colour red really suits her)


Look + as if / as though / like + clause

“It looks as if / as though it’s going to rain.”

Vous pouvez également entendre "like" utilisé à la place de "as if" ou "as though":

“It looks like it ‘s going to rain.”

Si vous avez un nom après "look", vous ne pouvez pas utiliser "as if" ou "as though". Au lieu de cela, utilisez "like":

“It looks like rain.”


Look like (ressembler à)

“She looks like her mother.”

Aussi:

look alike = se ressembler

“Those two really look alike!”

(a look-alike competition = un concours où vous essayez de ressembler à une personne célèbre)

look the same = se ressembler

“He looks the same as his father.”

good-looking = séduisant

“He’s a very good-looking man!”

have good looks = avoir l'air attirant

“Do you think it’s important to have good looks in order to succeed?”

give someone a dirty look = regarder quelqu'un d'un mauvais œil

“Don’t look now, but Jenny is over there and she’s giving us such a dirty look!”


Verbes à particule communs avec "Look"

Look for = chercher quelque chose

“He’s always looking for his keys.”

Look at = concentrez-vous sur quelque chose que vous pouvez voir

“Look at that man over there!”

Look after = prendre soin de quelqu'un

“He has to look after his kids at the weekend.”

Look around = visitez un endroit pour l'inspecter

“Some people are coming to look around our house tonight. We want to sell it.”

“They looked around the shops in the morning then visited the museum.”

Look forward to = anticiper quelque chose avec plaisir

“I’m looking forward to my holiday!”

(Nous l'utilisons également comme phrase finale dans les lettres et les e-mails, tels que “I look forward to meeting you next week”.)

Look out = faire attention

“Look out! There’s a car coming!”

Look up to = admirer quelqu'un

“Is there anyone in your family that you look up to?”

Look down on = considérer quelqu'un comme inférieur

“He’s a terrible snob and he looks down on people who are poorer than him.”
